Free or nearly free software for clipping large/ 1080p mkv files on mac

Trying to vid for the first time in years, and I've gone back to MPEG Streamclip for clipping purposes, but as well as no longer being as stable as it used to be, it doesn't seem to be able to deal with large .mkv files.

I have no problem clipping the .mkv that are around 1 gb 720p but can't deal with .mkv files that are around 4gb 1080p. (I'm not technically savvy enough to know whether it's the size or the encoding it's having an issue with).

Any recommendations for for newer software that might deal with files better? (I'm using Lightworks for the actual vidding)

Mavericks

I'm planning to update to Mavericks on my Mac Pro - has anyone already done so, and if so, have you found any incompatibilities with programmes such as MacTheRipper (I have version 3.0 r14i that works with Lion), Mpeg Streamclip or Handbrake? I don't actually vid on the Mac, but I use it for all my converting and ripping, so would hate to lose that ability.

EDITED TO ADD: Impatience got the better of me and I upgraded. The only thing affected is Flip4Mac (which enables you to play WMV files in Quicktime) but I hardly ever need that. So... if you're worried about upgrading, I can report that MacTheRipper 3.0 r14i, Mpeg Streamclip and Handbrake seem to be compatible.

Stibs Transitions

Hey guys,

Does anyone have a copy of Stibs Free Transitions for Final Cut Pro? I can't find it online any more and I've just had to reinstall and failed to back up my copy. I could really do with the blur cross!

eta Got them! If anyone needs them, give me a shout.

Exporting vids for VVC on the mac - FCP/ffmpegx instructions

So I just went through the process of figuring out how to export vids for VVC using FCP and ffmpegx, and since the instructions on the VVC website are a bit out of date, I posted my updated instructions here. LMK if you find any bugs!

Mods, this needs a "software: ffmpegx" tag.

Free DVD ripper for Mac (thru May 1)

WinX DVD Ripper for Mac

WinX DVD Ripper for Mac is an all-in-one DVD ripper designed to make perfect 1:1 DVD copy to hard drive and rip your DVD movies on Mac OS to iTunes, MOV, MP4, FLV, etc that playable on iPad, iPod, iPhone, Apple-TV, PSP and much more. It also supports extracting music from the DVD files and saving as MP3 format.

Requires: Mac OS X Tiger/Leopard/Snow Leopard (and apparently Intel chips).

There were some problems with the activation code earlier but I have just successfully DLed and activated the program.

MAC: Exporting to MPEG-2 (m2v): overcoming Snow Leopard issues

Here's what I know:

  1. Quicktime 10 doesn't have a Pro version, but you can install Quicktime 7 for Snow Leopard. This gets you all the Pro features (provided you previously purchased QT Pro).

  2. All the export formats are available except MPEG-2, which is essential for submission to conventions.

  3. The reason for this is that the QTMPEGExport.component does not come with QT 10/Snow Leopard. (Note: I'm not talking about the MPEG-2 Playback component. I have that.) Instead, all MPEG-2 exporting is supposed to happen from Compressor.

  4. Supposedly, the way to re-acquire the QTMPEGExport.component is to reinstall DVD Studio Pro. I find I am unable to do so without reinstalling the entirety of Final Cut Studio, which I would like to avoid doing if possible as I am in the middle of a project.

  5. I have successfully exported 4:3 files using Compressor. However, I have not figured out how to export a letterboxed 16:9 file (4:3 frame size for cons) using Compressor.

My questions:

  1. Does anyone have a copy of the QTMPEGExport.component they could make available to me? If you have it, it should live in System/Library/Quicktime.

  2. If not, can someone point me to or walk me through instructions for exporting a MPEG-2 file from Compressor that is letterboxed 16:9 footage (4:3 frame size)?

(Insert anti-upgrading rant here.)
