Hey everyone! So, I'm dipping my toes into After Effects, and working on my first AE-involved project. I've been using these awesome AE tutorials to get a handle on the basics, and now I'm ready to try making some AE effects work in my vid.

My question is about porting between FCP and AE. I've done most of my editing in FCP and just want to add some frills in AE, but what's the best way to go from one to another without losing too much quality? I know I can export from FCP as an .mov file, open it in AE, export it again, etc., but that seems convoluted. Googling around, I found this article by Ken Stone, which seems like a good option, but it was written in 2001, and even my ancient copy of FCP is more recent than that. (I'm working with FCP 5, AE CS3, so it's a bit of a mishmash). So does anyone know of a more up to date way of porting between these two programs without exporting a dozen times?

The google machine also tells me that there are programs that do just this (Automatic Duck gets mentioned a lot), but I don't have the $$ for the program, and I don't know scripting from a hole in the ground.

(mods, could use a tag for software: after effects. thanks!)

So I just went through the process of figuring out how to export vids for VVC using FCP and ffmpegx, and since the instructions on the VVC website are a bit out of date, I posted my updated instructions here. LMK if you find any bugs!

Mods, this needs a "software: ffmpegx" tag.

I posted this just recently on [personal profile] starlady's thread talking about AMVs and fanvids.

Cutting out a frame from clip A and inserting clip B into it, or overlaying clip B onto clip A in some way. Examples: The Test by [livejournal.com profile] heresluck, which overlays Star Trek TOS onto footage from the Reboot movie to show us stuff about the Kirk/Spock relationship, and I'm your man by [livejournal.com profile] charmax which does it with mirrors.

Sometimes people cut the screen into sections and show different things in each section, sort of like the opening credits sequence to every 70s TV show ever ;) I'm not thinking any really good examples though. Oh! Yes! Vogue by [personal profile] luminosity has a lot of this, though there's a lot of other stuff going on there too.

Something else I've seen is people using effects to texturise (for want of a better word) footage, to make it look old or something. You quite often see sepia tones, old film effects, and similar. Examples: Closer by T. Jonesy and Killa, go back to sleep, by TikiTyler9 (also does other stuff with colour and black and white), I am/Lamb by [personal profile] lim.

lim has a number of vids that have a sketchy, hand-drawn sort of a texture; "Us" is the best known of them, but "This is how it works" also does this. Some of her vids have a different, scrapbooky sort of effect, see eg. "Wallpaper" and "People are People".

(Wow, I wish some of these vidders would write (or point me at) tutorials on how to do this stuff in Final Cut.)

(full comment, for context.)

So... can anyone point me at tutorials for how to do any of these things in Final Cut? (Edit: or other/related mac-based tools.)

(Mods: suggested tags: tech: effects, software: final cut.)
